One of the staples of the Rolex lineup since its inception, The Rolex Datejust needs no introduction. First launched in 1945, it was the first wristwatch ever produced with an automatically changing date function. Without a doubt, the Datejust is the most recognisable and popular watch in the world. Mainly due to its excellent quality and relatively affordable price point, a Datejust is always a good idea.
Rolex made a whole host of dial and case variants for the Datejust and while they are relatively common, there are some rarer dial variants and above this there are the holy grail unicorns. This Rolex Datejust belongs to the latter, being one of the most special and sought after Datejust references out there. While it may look like a normal Datejust, this 1601 is crafted entirely out of 18k white gold and comes fitted on a just as rare 18k white gold jubilee bracelet.
There are two reasons why this Datejust is so rare. Back then, yellow gold the colour of choice and so you do find precious metal Datejusts in that tone. Furhermore, for those who could afford a gold Rolex they went straight for the flagship Day Date model and a result, they just didn’t make that many white gold Datejusts. As we all know, the less the demand for the watch back then, the more desirable it is today as Rolex collectors are always looking for unusual models.
This particular Rolex Datejust 1601 further comes with a stunning black glossy gilt dial and doorstep markers, adding to its overall desirability. The cherry on top is that under the sun, the true dial reveals itself, with the dial starting to turn shades of tropical brown towards the center.
While to most it might just look the same, if you inspect closer, you will notice that there are subtle differences that make this watch much more impressive on the wrist. Firstly, the weight and heft of the watch is unmistakably gold. The lugs are different where they join to the case, reminiscent of Day Date cases instead along with the fluted bezel, that is much more elegantly crafted. Overall, this is a true aficionado’s watch, a statement piece without screaming out loud. Subtle, and elegant as they say, as for those who know, know.
