Watchmakers often have specific complications that speak to their heritage, DNA and strengths, and Patek Phillipe is no different. An excellent example of this very complication is the World Time, an ingenious complication that displays the time in 24 time zones across the globe that Patek Philippe popularised in the mid-1950s.
Debuting in the year 2000, the Ref. 5110J marked Patek Philippe's return to world-time complications since the introduction of the renowned Ref. 2523. This reference garnered widespread acclaim in the watch industry, celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and sophisticated design. With a tastefully sized 37mm case crafted from 18-carat yellow gold, the mesmerizing silver opaline dial features a central guilloché pattern, a contrasting graduated 24-hour ring, and a satin-brushed portion along the dial’s periphery displaying the names of 24 cities representing specific time zones in a simple and legible font. Visually, this creates a compelling contrast against its intricate guilloché center.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the Ref. 5110J epitomizes understated class. Its exquisitely crafted 18-carat yellow gold case boasts a clean, domed bezel, a Calatrava-signed crown, and a practical quick-set pusher at 10 o'clock of its case, facilitating effortless adjustments when traversing various time zones.
Powering the Ref. 5110J from within is Patek Philippe’s very own self-winding Cal. 240 HU, comprising a total of 239 parts. When viewed through its exhibition case back, you can admire this beautifully-finished caliber in its full unobstructed glory, showcasing a patented Gyromax balance wheel, a self-compensating free-sprung balance spring, a 22-carat solid gold micro-rotor and beautiful Côte de Genève (Geneva Stripes) finishing throughout. It also proudly bears the prestigious Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal), attesting to its remarkable precision.
For those unaware, the Ref. 5110 is a discontinued reference as it was then later succeeded by the Ref. 5130 in 2006 (which we have previously listed on the site).
Ideal for those with interests spanning multiple cities, the World Time complication served as an excellent travel companion, contributing to the globalization of the world throughout the 20th century. Even today, it serves as a reminder of our interconnected society - a testament to the power of fine mechanical horology.
