Arguably one of the most iconic watches of all time, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak's reputation precedes itself within watch collecting circles. Released to fight the Quartz Crisis in the 70s, the Royal Oak's avant-garde design and unconventional case as a stainless steel luxury sports watch from a traditional member of the Holy Trinity shocked the watchmaking world enough that brands quickly followed and brought out their own versions.
The Royal Oak we have on offer here today is quite an interesting variation. It was introduced to the watch world shortly after the original Royal Oak 5402 as AP was experimenting extensively with the integration of a variety of complications within its now iconic, octagonal case. The result was a stunning range of complicated AP Royal Oaks, including this one – the 25730ST.
The 25730ST comes in a stainless steel case that is 36mm (diameter) x 8mm (thickness) accompanied by their signature integrated bracelet with an “AP” signed clasp. The matte black dial features an array of functions coupled with a range of finishing techniques. A glance over the watch and you will find a date function at 2 o ’clock, a second timezone at 6 o ’clock, and a power reserve indicator at the 9 o ’clock position. All of these sub-dials are tied together seamlessly by the Tapisserie guilloche in the middle section of the dial, creating a synergistic aesthetic which contrasts beautifully with the overall sporty yet subdued look of the stainless steel case and bracelet.
Powering the Royal Oak 25730ST from within is the 54 jewel, JLC- based, self-winding cal. 2229-2845. It is an absolutely fantastic movement with a 40-hour power reserve and features an oscillating rotor with one segment of the rotor being made out of 21 carat gold.
In our opinion, the 25730ST is an underdog Royal Oak, and a variation that is often not discussed enough. The complete package of the dimensions, rarity, wearability, and workmanship really speaks for itself. The watch is fairly slim at 36mm but wears much larger on the wrist than their dimensions on paper may suggest due to its unique case shape.
